Stardust Families call on Taoiseach Enda Kenny to retract Dail statement printable version
07 Feb 2014 filed by editor - General The families of those who perished in the 1982 Stardust nightclub blaze, experts and their solicitor are now calling on the Taoiseach Enda Kenny to retract the Dail statement (see below) as he has misled the Dail and deputies Minister Tommy Broughan and Terrance Flanagan. In his claims he has been told the families solicitor is to give him another submission. That is not the case. The Dail record is included below.
In a statement released today, the families' representative said: "To make life easier on the Taoiseach who has stated with minister Shatter they are to busy to meet the families, two members of the stardust group who lost family held a sit in protest in government buildings for the Taoiseach Enda Kenny or Minister Shatter to hand them a submission to back up the Taoiseach's claims and the minister of justice claims that any thing the families have presented or they have seen is not new evidence.
"After a twenty four hour sit in the Taoiseach was unavailable to see them as he was very busy with Kenny Egan in the Dail. The Minister of Justice had his offices locked up when he heard they were on the way in for his submission. Neither made any approach to the families or handed them any submissions to back up their claims. Both minister have misled the people of Ireland and the Dail.
"The families now require An Taoiseach Enda Kenny to apologise to the Dail and have it written into the Dail record he knew full well when making the claim about another submission from the families that was not true as he had receIved emails and letters which stated clearly he would not be getting another submission until he produced the government submission first which proves that what him and Shatter have seen was not new evidence.
"We are denied our rights by officials in the government. Since 2004 we have presented new evidence. Where is your submission to prove we never have presented new evidence. The 2009 Paul Coffey review states clearly we have presented new evidence not in the public domain. We now are demanding a commission of investigation. It is time and long over due to correct the public record and validate the lives of those who died in the disaster by holding an effective investigation as is required by all criminal laws and the human right charter."Dail statement

Deputy Thomas P. Broughan: When can we expect the Maritime Area and Foreshore (Amendment) Bill and the Criminal Justice (Miscellaneous Provisions) Bill to come before the House? Last week myself and Deputies Terence Flanagan and Boyd Barrett attended a press conference arranged by the Stardust Relatives and Victims Committee. That committee asked me to remind the Taoiseach that he promised the people of Coolock and Artane that once he got into office, he would convene a commission of investigation—An Ceann Comhairle: We cannot discuss that issue now.
Deputy Thomas P. Broughan: under the legislation introduced by the former Minister for Justice and Equality, Deputy McDowell, in 2004. He said that there would be a short and quick commission of investigation into the Stardust tragedy, the 33rd anniversary of which falls on Friday-week. Will the Taoiseach keep his promise? I feel very strongly, as do other local Deputies, that he should do so. It is a legacy issue that we need to deal with.
An Ceann Comhairle: The Deputy asked about a couple of Bills.
The Taoiseach: The Maritime Area and Foreshore (Amendment) Bill is due before the summer. In respect of the other matter that the Deputy raised, the last time I had contact with some of the survivors of the Stardust tragedy, they informed me that their legal advisors had new information to present. I advised them that their legal advisors should present that information, if it is new, and I understand that they are going to do so.
