Pay for water or go to jail . . .       printable version
05 Oct 2014 filed by editor - Editorial

GMC Sierra Ltd, which has been contracted to install water meters on behalf of Bord Gais, wants protesters jailed.

Irish Water, currently owned by Ireland's riches man Kevin Tierney, is a subsidiary of Bord Gais.

The provision of clean water is considered a 'human right'. In Ireland it is funded through a number of taxes. The charges imposed through metering will en effect be the fifth charge collected under the banner of paying for water.

To date some €85million has been spent on external consultants.

The installation of water meters will do nothing whatsoever to alleviate the current huge cost to the country through the loss of water through what is now an inadequate, old system that loses over 40% of water nationally to leakage. Meanwhile millions are being spent on rolling out a system that will do effectively nothing to address the problem of massive loss to leakage.

Is this the society you wish to support?

Surely any intended government sell-off of a publicly owned resource such as water requires a public referendum approval or rejection?

You are instead being told by your government that you should simply go about your daily life without dissent and meekly hand over your money to pay for something that you are already paying for.

By doing nothing, this is the society you are supporting.
