Stardust struggle continues printable version
21 May 2014 filed by editor - General Family and victims' representatives of the Stardust fire tragedy say they continue to be concerned by what they say has been "obstructive, unfair and inaccurate treatment" of their submissions by top civil servants in the Department of Justice and in the Department of an Taoiseach regarding recent new evidence and matters in the past.
Thirty-three years on from the fire which claimed the lives of 48 people and injured hundreds more, the families of those who died say:
- The truth has still not been acknowledged and put on public record.
- The families and victims believe that new compelling evidence warrants a fresh investigation into the disaster.
- on the 30th april 2014, it was confirmed to us, by one of the experts at the Keane tribunal, that the fire started on the first floor level and it was electrical
- The electrical system of the premises was cited by an inspector two weeks before the fire and was under investigation, and it appears arching, tripping and overloading, etc. had occurred. However the fire started, once it reached this store room and raged unchecked, there was going to be a very high possibility of a serious fire and very serious consequences.
- The families and victims look forward to the Minister of Justice properly addressing their concerns, particularly in relation to the illicit re-writing of the original report and the failure of the Government to honour its commitments to both a new investigation and discharge the costs of the families and victims experts.
The families say they have an audio recording of the ex-principle officer to the Taoiseach, and he refers in the recording to a secretary general and also the then Minister for Justice. They claim the recording explains why the department of justice wont do anything to further the Stardust issues.
Fhe families have contacted the Department of Justice asking for a reply to their request for a meeting with Minister Fitzgerald and have vowed to picket the Department of Justice should the minister fail to respond to their request.
