Illegal bullying bar door staff/bouncer mentality in Limerick printable version
10 Feb 2014 filed by editor - General A story came by me about someone who was visiting a new bar in Limerick city recently. It was the person's fourth visit to the bar and the customer had enjoyed all visits, chatting with staff and other patrons alike.
Having watched a late afternoon rugby international match on the bar's screens, the customer decided to stay on a while longer into the evening.
The visit was ruined when on leaving the bar stool to visit the smoking area a member of the bar's door security staff, who had just started work, appeared and blocked the customer's way with the snarled question "Where do you think you're going?"
The customer explained but was met with the reply "where are you sitting?"
When the customer pointed to the bar stool the doorman told the customer to finish off and leave.
Disturbed by the man's attitude, the customer asked to speak with the duty bar manager, who had served the customer earlier in the day in another section of the bar.
The customer returned to the bar stool and unfinished drink to await on speaking with the manager. However, despite again requesting another member of the bar staff to remind the manager to approach, nobody did. Instead the doorman approached and asked why the customer had not left and again angrily told the customer to finish up and leave.
Two other patrons, sitting next to the customer, began a conversation about a place both person's knew. One of the patrons then asked the customer if he could buy a drink. When he attempted to buy the customer a drink the female bar staff refused, saying she was 'not allowed to serve' the customer again.
The customer had a few minutes earlier observed the doorman speaking in a corner of the bar with the duty manager.
The customer continued in conversation with the patrons sitting nearby but was rudely interrupted again by the doorman who approached and said "nobody wants to hear what you have to say - I want you to finish your drink and get out".
One leaving the premises a short while later the customer spoke with the doorman outside the bar to ask what the problem was. By way of reply, the doorman said he 'had an issue' with the customer and would be asking the customer to leave whenever he was working, if the customer was in the bar.
The premises has deliberately not been named in this article.
The customer has to date spoken with the general manager who simply sided with the doorman and declined to look at the matter in an honest, objective and realistic way.
The customer told thetruth.ie: "To take discriminatory action based on the unfounded and uncorroborated word of a doorman who simply doesn't like someone is an unlawful abuse of privilege. I am dismayed that having journeyed into the heart of Bosnia during the war there in 1995 to hold Christmas parties for war-orphaned children with over a quarter of a million pounds worth of goods donated by the public, I now find myself meeting this kind of ill treatment and insulting behavior in Limerick."
The customer is now awaiting on speaking directly to the publican. Should no meaningful and satisfactory result ensue, further measures will be pursued.
At that point this website will have no hesitation in naming the premises.
Update: This issue remains unresolved
