Stardust Tragedy Victims Families Occupying Government Buildings       printable version
05 Feb 2014 filed by editor - General

Family members of the victims of the 1981 Stardust nightclub fire tragedy are currently occupying Government Buildings on Dublin's Merrion Street.

They are demanding that Taoiseach Enda Kenny live up to the commitment he made to the families in 2011, namely that he would ensure that a full examination of the outstanding concerns of the Stardust families would take place. This, to date, has not happened.

Antoinette Keegan, spokesperson for the families, said: "We want justice but those with the power under the Commissions of Investigation Act 2004 to establish an independent inquiry into the Stardust tragedy have at every hand's turn, ignored us and our independent evidence.

"Just this very day the Taoiseach lied to the Dail when he stated that 'he has been advised that the families solicitor is to give him a submission with this new evidence in it. He intends to consider this'. We have emailed and texted the Taoiseach as recently as this morning making it clear to him that we are not giving any more submissions to him, the governmentor any other person in government until such time as we see their submission which proves what we have presented over the past 10 years in four submission is not new evidence."

Ms. Keegan concluded: "When we went to the Department of Justice this morning they locked all the doors and refused us entry. That is why we are now occupying Government Buildings here on Merrion St. We're not leaving here until the Taoiseach does the right thing and sees us. Having fought for justice for our loved ones for so long, we refuse to go away,"
